British Citizenship - Service Available Soon

We specialise in working with those who wish to become British citizens.

There have been important changes to the way British citizenship is granted to people applying to register or naturalise. Under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, successful applicants are required to attend citizenship ceremonies held in their local communities. This new arrangement applies to all applications the Home Office receives on or after 1 January 2004. During ceremony new citizens will be required to make an oath or affirmation to Her Majesty the Queen and a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom. After this they will each receive a certificate as a citizen of the United Kingdom. There are a number of ways to becoming a British citizen. See below for two examples.

How do you become a Citizen of the UK?

Naturalisation
If you have been settled in the United Kingdom for one year and been living in the United Kingdom for 5 years or if you are married to a British citizen and have been living in the United Kingdom for 3 years you may be eligible for naturalisation.

5 years residing in the UK and have had settlement for 1 year
  1. You must have been physically residing in the UK for 5 years prior to the application and not been absent for more than 450 days or not more than 90 days in the year you are applying unless there is good reason for exceeding this.
  2. You must have had indefinite leave to remain in the UK for one year prior to making the application.
  3. You must be of good character. Checks are also usually made to see if you are financially solvent.
  4. You must be of sound mind and therefore able to understand the duties that go with being a UK citizen.
  5. You must pass a test to show that you have knowledge of life in the UK as well as a sufficient level of English or alternatively attend Citizenship and English language classes. See www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk for further details.
  6. You must have an intention to continue to live in the United Kingdom once you are granted British citizenship.
  7. If you satisfy all of the above rules, you will be required to attend a citizenship ceremony and at this ceremony, swear your allegiance to the Queen.
Marriage to a British Citizen

The rules are the same as for the 5 years residency above except that you must have been living in the United Kingdom for three years continuously. This means you must not have been absent for more than 270 days in total and not more than 90 days in the year prior to your application unless there is good reason for exceeding this.
